Today, 11 March 2026, marks 24 years since the release of Arch Linux 0.1 «Homer». Judd Vinet announced it on the mailing list with a sentence that sums it all up:

Alpha 4 is here, and it is the biggest update we have published so far. It is not a list of touch-ups: a good part of the desktop stopped depending on borrowed pieces from other environments and got its own —keyring, permissions, notifications, login screen and lock screen— all drawn with the same colors, the same corner radius and the same typeface you chose.

We keep moving forward with the development of VasakOS, and we decided to release Alpha 3, which has many improvements and fixes with respect to the previous version. It is still in Alpha state, so it is common to run into bugs or unfinished features. Any report can be made in the repositories and/or in the official communication channels.

The Vasak OS ecosystem keeps growing. After presenting new applications such as the file manager, today we want to show another fundamental component of the system: Vasak Terminal.

Vasak OS is an open source project that seeks to build a modern Linux distribution based on Arch Linux, focused on offering a complete, coherent and well integrated user experience.

While migrating several components of Vasak OS to Rust we took an important architectural decision: unify several modules of the system into shared processes to simplify the desktop’s internal communication.

The people behind Vendefoul Linux decided to make a version of their distribution with our desktop. It is in an experimental state for now, because at the moment vasak-desktop does not have broad compatibility with other non-systemd inits; we will work together anyway to make the desktop integration easier.

We tried to start 2026 with everything, so we decided to release alpha 2 and to make many changes to the way we have been working…
