About VasakOS

VasakOS is a free operating system built on top of Arch Linux, with a desktop and a set of applications of its own. It began inside Vasak Group and grows with the community, around one concrete goal: that a free, open source alternative to commercial operating systems should exist, without giving up on the experience of using them.

It began inside Vasak Group and grows with the community, around one concrete goal: that a free, open source alternative to commercial operating systems should exist, without giving up on the experience of using them.

What sets it apart from other distributions is where we put the work. We do not assemble a selection of applications from other environments: the panel, the file manager, the terminal, the settings, the gallery, the media player, the keyring and the session manager are written for this system, in Rust with Tauri and Vue, sharing a single component library. That is why everything looks and behaves the same way, and why the interface can be restyled with CSS without recompiling anything.

Underneath it is still Arch: pacman, the AUR, the wiki, and the whole ecosystem you already know.

Use VasakOS at home

The GNU/Linux ecosystem put almost everything a family computer needs a pacman command away.

  • The usual browsers —Firefox, Chrome, Vivaldi, Brave— with support for streaming services.

Arch Linux is a common base for development precisely because new versions of the tools arrive so quickly.

  • IDEs and editors that are current: VS Code, JetBrains, Neovim, Zed.
  • Toolchains for any language, containers with Docker and Podman, and virtual machines with libvirt.
  • Compatibility with the enterprise software that already runs on GNU/Linux.

Who is behind it

VasakOS is developed by Vasak Group together with the community. The project is a member of Open Invention Network, the patent-defence alliance of the Linux ecosystem.

All of the code is public and under the GPL-3.0 licence. The decisions, the issues and the history of each component can be read on GitHub, and what is coming next is on the public roadmap.
